We do this through the following:
1.
Online Media
- drive discussion through the Western Muslim Magazine and Speak Free Podcast.
2.
Events
- create forums with leading experts on Muslims and Islam.
3. Local Community Development
- enhance community leadership and participation through Western Muslim Chapters and local community projects.
Our Story
The idea was founded in 2002 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada as a launch pad for discussion and creating a sense of identity. Originally founded at the University of Calgary, formally called the Muslim Youth Initiative, it was intended to provide Muslims an opportunity to facilitate discussion and find a sense of place amongst their peers. Today it is called the Western Muslim Initiative.
The idea began in the home of a University of Calgary graduate student, as a simple bridge between people who had ideas and wanted to discuss them freely. This idea grew into a magazine of meaningful contributions, editorials and works of local artists. From there the magazine then called Inspire, grew in popularity and following that Inspire no longer fit the image it held in the public’s eye. With the growth of the magazine we realized the scope of the organization had changed to include arts and culture of Muslims in the form of events and other activities. By natural evolution MYI soon became WMI.
What is in store for the future? Building on previous accomplishments the Western Muslim Initiative seeks to solidify its reputation as a leading expert on Western Muslim identity. To keep enhancing local Muslim communities through projects that leverage local talent. To create a network of academics that research and lectures on topics relevant to Western Muslims. To be an organization that assists, educates, persuades and entertains on issues relating to Muslims living in the West.
Chapters
In 2008, a chapter of the organization was established on the University of Calgary campus with the hope of connecting with students. In just a few short years, the Western Muslim – University of Calgary Chapter (Chapter) has garnered a diverse following of Muslims and students from other faiths who are interested in having intellectual discussions on spirituality and Muslim identity.
