Letter to the Editor: The Mosquers, 2008
In response to “Me and the Mosquers”
The committee would first off like to thank the Western Muslim for putting up the film submissions on their website. This will undoubtedly enhance awareness and generate more interest amongst Muslims to participate in the future.
It is necessary to emphasize the fact that the Mosquer Awards are not just about winning or losing, and that the competition component is secondary to the overall purpose. The initiative started out as a way to provide an image of Muslims that is counter to what is presented in the mainstream media. It is an attempt to humanize Muslims and show the public that we are just like everyone else. In doing so, we are also encouraging young Muslims to showcase their creative side regardless of their expertise and to express themselves in a productive capacity. The Mosquers review featured on the Western Muslim website failed to take this into account.
The committee welcomes and strongly encourages constructive criticism as it will only improve future Mosquers events. The “review” by The Western Muslim, unfortunately focused on promoting and comparing a single movie to all other submissions. Taking it to a further level, the review insulted other contestants work and/or questioned their character - something the Mosquer’s committee certainly does not support.
The Mosquer’s committee invites all Western Muslim staff to attend next year’s event free of charge. By actually being at the event, you may see a side to it that could give you an alternate perspective.

I think that’s the key here…it goes without saying that the entertainment industry’s portrayal of Muslims is nothing but that, and so it’s important to have shows like ‘Little Mosque on the Prairie’ and events such as this.
I would agree with the assertion that the article focused on some elements while ignoring others, but at the same time it has to be remembered that this is one person’s perspective on the event and I think he made it fairly clear (often referring to himself in the piece).
I agree that we should have more coming out at the next event, so that we can have various opinions and views printed on the event.
