THE TEAM

Abdullah Mouslli - President

With experience in higher education and non-profits, a passion for community engagement, and a commitment to building and fostering inclusive spaces for cultural expression, I'm thrilled to take on a leadership role with WMI and to work with an incredibly talented and up committed group of individuals. As WMI, we aim to create the spaces and experiences we crave as the children of mixed identities and as Western Muslims in Calgary.

Ammara Cokar, BSc, P.Eng - VP Operations

Engineer by day and an artist/creative in every other moment in life. I am a Calgary native who didn’t grow up with the same spaces that the WMI offers Muslims growing up in the west today. I’m passionate about building community and creating space for people to feel like they belong, and helping bridge that identity gap that may exist between growing up a Muslim and living in the West.

Astawa Alam - VP Comms

Since first learning how to hack together websites, Astawa has spent the last 8 years working alongside Y Combinator-backed startups, international non-profits, and tech entrepreneurs of all sizes. He comfortably sits at the strategic intersection of storytelling and design, where he helps organizations and teams connect with the people who need their products the most. Outside of work, Astawa is a new runner who just completed his first 10K race in the Calgary Marathon. When he’s not behind his desk, you can find him behind a camera recording videos for TikTok or YouTube.

Hafsah Umer, B. Comm, MSW (2025) - VP Outreach

Hafsah believes in prioritizing meaningful connections, engaging in various outreach initiatives and amplifying diverse and local voices. As a passionate Master of Social Work student and community organizer, she is dedicated to community development and navigating the intersectionality of the Muslim experience. With her deep commitment to social justice and community cultivation, she is thrilled to be your new VP of Outreach at WMI!

Yousef Kahlon, BSc - VP Events & Programming

With seven years of experience in management consulting and deep roots in Calgary spanning over 20 years, Yousef brings his expertise and dedication to the Western Muslim Initiative, fostering growth and empowerment within Calgary's Muslim community.

Danial Sheikh - VP Grants

Danial Sheikh, a finance graduate from the University of Alberta, is more than just numbers and equations. Driven by a passion for community and cultural exploration, Danial actively engages in volunteer work. As a proud member of WMI (Western Muslim Initiative), he strives to carve out a space where Canadian Muslims can delve into their rich cultures and identities.

Sanaa Mohammed, BComm - Treasurer

My name is Sanaa and I am the Treasurer of WMI. I studied accounting in school and I am excited to apply my skills to the organization while helping create a space for our community to come together.  In my free time I love discovering new cafes and trying new foods.

Hasna Nazir - Events Co-Coordinator

Born and raised in Calgary, Hasna has a deep appreciation for the city's sunny days and vibrant cultural diversity. She is passionate about building uplifting and supportive spaces. As a self-proclaimed homebody, Hasna enjoys drawing, knitting, and cooking and cherishes cozy nights in with her beloved cat. However, you can count on her presence at this year's WMI events, as she looks forward to connecting with Calgary’s growing Muslim population. Join Hasna in embracing community at the upcoming events!

Arooba Siddiqui, BCST - Events Co-Coordinator

Arooba’s passions revolve around creative activities and bringing people together, and so when she went to her first MAM event a few years ago that combined these two passions, she knew she wanted to one day join the team behind the event. If not volunteering for WMI, she can be found cafe or thrift store hopping.

Qamar Hussaini - Content Creator

As a creative SAIT journalism graduate, I have always felt I had a natural aptitude for storytelling, design, and innovation. I am passionate about community, inclusivity, and diversity, especially here in Calgary. I enjoy highlighting the achievements and events of the Muslim community in Calgary, and I am committed to creating a platform where their stories can be showcased and celebrated. I want to create meaningful conversations and create a more inclusive and accepting environment for all members of the Muslim Calgary community.
